Musical Interlude - Wed Sept 10, 18:00 - 18:30

Venue: CuBo – University of Campus Bio-Medico of Rome

Enjoy a refined musical interlude performed by a clarinet and string quartet. Let yourself be carried away by classical melodies in a moment of elegant respite.

The Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is one of the masterpieces of chamber music, particularly admired for its elegance, sweetness, and melodic inventiveness. It was composed by Mozart in 1789, two years before his premature death. It was written for the clarinetist Anton Stadler, a close friend of Mozart and a virtuoso of the instrument. Mozart became fascinated by the rich tonal qualities and extension of the clarinet. He loved its warm tone and singable quality.

K.581 is written for clarinet in A and a string quartet, which was unusual for the time: quintets typically added a second viola or second cello, not a wind instrument.

The quintet stands out for its perfect fusion of clarinet and strings: it is not a miniature concerto, but a true chamber dialogue. The clarinet does not dominate; rather, it intertwines poetically with the other instruments. Mozart’s Quintet K.581 influenced many later composers, including Brahms, who also wrote a clarinet quintet (Op. 115). Interestingly, the opening phrase of the clarinet in Brahms’s quintet is a clear homage to Mozart’s work.

The quintet unfolds in four movements, following the classical form:

  1. Allegro
Sonata form, with a lyrical and conversational character between clarinet and strings.
  2. Larghetto
A slow and contemplative movement, with a particularly touching clarinet melody delicately supported by the strings.
  3. Menuetto and Trio
A lively minuet, with two trio sections, one of which features a dialogue between the clarinet and viola.
  4. Allegretto con variazioni
A simple theme followed by a set of variations that highlight the expressive and technical possibilities of the clarinet.

The K.581 quintet is performed by elements of the University Campus Bio-Medico Chamber Ensemble: Federico and Matteo Morbidelli (violins), Carlotta Libonati (viola), Mattia Geracitano (cello) and Alessandro Crescimbeni (clarinet).
